Neil Gits His Oven Fixed

29th June 2024
Posted by Neil Matthew

I heard an advert somewhere recently (it’s really hard to avoid them these days!) advising people on how to cut their expenditure in these tough times by going through their bank statement and seeing if there are any subscriptions going out of their account that they might have forgotten all about or maybe a direct debit that they might not need any more which can be cancelled. The inference was that we lead such busy lives that we don’t even know or remember what is coming out of our accounts regularly – believe me, I personally know EVERY single penny that passes through mine !!

Their “advice” on cutting back on unecessary monthly outgoings was “taken” by me many years ago – magazine subscriptions, newspaper deliveries, wheely bin cleaning, a gardener (hayfever issues – I don’t have a big garden !) window cleaners, numerous insurance policies and various other financial commitments I could actually live happily without have all long gone by the by. However, one exception is repair cover for my oven. I am on my third one now in the 33 years I have lived in my house and used to have a local chap come and sort any odd issues with it but he retired and when my second one gave up the ghost, having previously incurred a repair bill almost as costly as a new oven, I took the company up on their insurance offer.

Low and behold, a couple of weeks ago, I went to make some sausages & bacon on the grill and though I could hear all the right noises it just wasn’t heating them up !! So I got on the phone, fixed up a visit from an engineer and within a couple of days it was all mended good as new at no sudden huge charge to myself. OK, I have to fork out a few extra quid each month and probably pay double the cost of a brand new oven over the years, but it’s those unexpected big bills that are the hardest to deal with and really kill you, rather than a tenner or so slipping out every few weeks in between the TV licence and the council tax …

The engineer was quite a young chap and a big football fan who was heading out to Germany for the Euros. I expect by now he is more traumatized by what he’s seen there than I was at missing out on a couple of much anticpated cooked breakfasts this month !! This will lift your spirits – two hours of the good stuff repeated on Gateway this evening (Saturday) at 5pm …
