F1 update – Austrian GP

Round 11 of the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship was held at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Austria for the Austrian Grand Prix.

Mercedes’s George Russell took his first win of the year, it was his and the team’s first win since Brazil 2022 after a collision between Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and McLaren’s Lando Norris, Norris’s McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri finished second with Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz third.

Austrian GP – top 5:

  • 1st: George Russell – Mercedes
  • 2nd: Oscar Piastri – McLaren
  • 3rd: Carlos Sainz – Ferrari
  • 4th: Lewis Hamilton – Mercedes
  • 5th: Max Verstappen – Red Bull

Other highlights:

  • The talking point of the race was the collision between Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and McLaren’s Lando Norris which occured on lap 64, whilst fighting for the lead, the Red Bull driver was given a 10 second time penalty for causing the collision, whilst Norris failed to see the flag but was given a 5 second time penalty for abusing track limits.
  • Haas had a great race as both Nico Hulkenberg and Kevin Magnussen finished the race in sixth and eighth respectively.
  • Daniel Ricciardo bought his RB home in ninth.
  • Williams’s Alex Albon was given a 5 second time penalty for crossing the line at pit entry.
  • Mercedes Lewis Hamilton served a 5 second time penalty for crossing the white line on pit exit.

News:

  • Alpine announced that Pierre Gasly will stay with the team from 2025 and beyond after he signed a contract extension.
  • Aston Martin announced that Lance Stroll will also stay from 2025 and beyond after signing a contract extension.
  • Ferrari academy driver from Chelmsford, Essex Oliver Bearman took his first Formula 2 win of the year after winning the sprint race held in Austria.
  • Williams academy driver Luke Browning took his second Formula 3 victory of the year after winning the feature race also held at Austria.
  • RB’s Yuki Tsunoda was fined $30,000 for a radio incident.
  • Aston Martin announced that Andy Cowell will be their new CEO.

The next round of the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship will be held at the legendary Silverstone Circuit in Northampton for the British Grand Prix on 5th to 7th July.
